"The Home Team" is the second episode in the first series of the ITV comedy My Parents Are Aliens. It was first broadcast on November 15 in 1999.

Synopsis[]

When Brian and Sophie read about a quiz in the school magazine they decide to enter in order to bring the family closer together. Mel and Josh initially refuse to be part of the team, but then when Josh's friends bet him that he is too cowardly to take part, he decides to go along with it.

Plot[]

After reading through the school magazine, Brian and Sophie find out about a quiz being held by the school. Brian is eager to sign up, as he feels it will help them earn Mel and Josh's respect and bring the family closer. Sophie eventually agrees, and the next day, the whole family, minus Lucy, has been signed up. Josh and Mel are not happy when they find out, feeling that Brian and Sophie will humiliate themselves, exposing them as aliens. They pull out, but Lucy decides to step up and do the quiz, saying she could ask her best friend Wendy to join them as the teams require four people.

Josh crosses the family's names off of the list of participants, but Dave Locket sees him and he immediately changes his mind. He then tries to convince Mel to reconsider, using his friend Frankie, who is infatuated with Mel, to help him out. Mel eventually gives in after Frankie follows her around everywhere, however Lucy, feeling ignored and betrayed, pulls out and joins Wendy and her parents, as they need an extra person in their team.

Brian and Sophie discover a note from Lucy, realizing they don't give her enough attention whereas Mel and Josh always want to be left alone. They surprise her at school with balloons saying they have lots of fun activities planned, but Lucy can't leave school early. They wonder if this is too much, while Lucy feels guilty for not telling them she has joined another team.

That night, Brian, Sophie, Mel and Josh beat Dave's family, putting them in the final alongside Lucy, Wendy and her parents. Lucy refuses to answer the final question, even though she knows the answer, allowing the rest of her family to win. As they are about to have their picture taken for the magazine, they call Lucy in to join them, while Lucy and Wendy agree to remain friends. Frankie runs up with a bouquet of flowers and kisses Mel as the picture is taken.

This episode marks the first appearance of Wendy Richardson and Frankie Perkins. Also introduced is Frankie's crush on Mel.
Wendy's mother is played by a different actress to the one who would portray her in later seasons.
Mel's age is confirmed as 14 and Frankie's (and presumably Josh's) as 11 in this episode. This may cause continuity error; as each season spans a year, this would make Mel 19 in Season 6, but she is still at school in this season.
